5. CHAMONIX

It's no surprise that the ski area on the slopes of the highest mountain in the Alps is known as expert territory. Chamonix is on the 15,000-feet Mont Blanc and, adding to its legendary status, was the site of the first Winter Olympics. Early Olympians may recognize the breathtaking scenery, but not the world-class infrastructure that has since grown up around it.

Although Chamonix is known - and rightly so - for its superb expert terrain and off-piste skiing, that doesn't mean that all skiers can't find enough snow. A high-altitude location, aided by the cooling effect of four glaciers, gives it some of the best snow conditions in the Alps.

Chamonix spans several ski villages, and the best beginner terrain is found at Le Tour, at the northern end of the Domaine de Balme valley, where the gentle slopes are perfect for beginners. The gentle family-friendly trails of Les Houches wind through the forests.

But Chamonix really shines in expert terrain. The expert runs at Grands Montets offer the most vertical drop in the world. The Verte run, used for World Cup races, is 2.5 miles of steep slopes and jumps.

Chamonix is known as one of the most glamorous resorts, and you can live in luxury at the magnificent Grand Hotel des Alpes. But smaller places like the Hotel de l'Arve or the chalet-style Auberge du Manoir offer budget rooms and warm hospitality.
