The Strasbourg Christmas Market: A Celebration of Magic, Tradition and Local Craftsmanship
The Strasbourg Christmas Market, known as Christkindelsmärik, is one of the oldest and most iconic Christmas markets in Europe, dating back to 1570. Each year, it transforms the city into a winter wonderland, drawing millions of visitors from around the world to experience the festive magic of Strasbourg with its iconic Christmas tree, located in Place Kléber. This year, once again it opens its magic from the 27th of November to the 27th of December 2024.
With over 300 wooden chalets spread across 12 themed locations in the city center, the market ensures there’s something for everyone to discover. The beautifully decorated stalls offer a variety of local treasures crafted by artisans, including handmade ornaments, textiles, ceramics and pottery. A paradise for food lovers too, where you can try Bredle - traditional Alsatian Christmas cookie - hot spiced wine (vin chaud), choucroute garnie, and chocolate creations. Adding to the market’s unique charm this year, a special chalet honours Strasbourg’s title as UNESCO’s World Book Capital, by celebrating local publishers and literary works.
A new focus on sustainability is evident with initiatives like the use of low-energy LEDs to make the beauty of Christmas lights more energy-efficient, but also the introduction of reusable cups at every stall, where for each returned cup, 1€ is donated to charity, fostering that sense of community and giving during the holiday season.
Whether you’re savouring a warm pastry, admiring the breathtaking lights, or chatting with passionate artisans, every moment is rooted in the joy and spirit of Christmas.
