The Festival of Lights 2024: Lyon’s Iconic Celebration Turns 25
From the 5th to the 8th of December 2024, Lyon will once again light up the streets with its famous Fête des Lumières. For four magical nights, the city will showcase an array of mesmerizing light installations around the city, turning Lyon into a vibrant canvas of creativity and wonder. It all began in 1852 when the people of Lyon, in an act of devotion, lit candles in their windows to honour the inauguration of the Virgin Mary’s statue atop Fourvière Hill. Over time, this gesture blossomed into the grand show we now know and love.
Around the city, captivating artworks, light shows and interactive experiences for everyone from both local and international artists will entertain Lyon. New this year, the CinéCréatis film school will help celebrate history by screening archival footage and sharing local memories of the event’s evolution.
The festival continues its tradition of giving back to the community where the proceeds from the Lumignons du Coeur (Heart Lights) initiative will support the Alynea, a non-profit which aids people in need. Visitors can purchase 2€ candles to contribute to the cause and add their own light to the artwork installed at Place Sathonay.
The Fête des Lumières is more than just a stunning visual display - it’s a celebration of Lyon’s artistic, social values and a testament to the power of art to unite communities and illuminate the world.
