Discover the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations: MUCEM

Commonly known as the MUCEM (Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations), this museum has become a true cultural landmark in Marseille, a hotspot for history, arts, anthropology, and archaeology. Opened in 2013, the MUCEM plays a significant role in the appreciation of Mediterranean cultures, inviting visitors to reflect on the social, political, and economic dynamics of this region.

Unique Architecture

The building itself is like no other in the world, designed by French architect Rudy Ricciotti. The 48,000 ft² cube structure is embellished with a concrete lacework facade, letting rays of light pass through. Its shape and design are so recognizable, making a bold statement about the urban landscape of the city of Marseille. It is built on the old port of the city, making it look like it’s floating on the sea while blending with the 12th-century Saint Jean Fort thanks to a 443-foot-long footbridge. Truly mixing the rich history of the oldest city in France with the modernity of the contemporary world.

Mediterranean Civilizations

Sitting on the northern bank of the sea, the goal of the museum is to showcase the links and exchanges that occurred between the hundreds of years of civilizations on the shores of the Mediterranean. It explores the stories of the peoples, as well as their cultures based on arts, practices, objects, beliefs, and more—unveiling their diversity and richness. The MUCEM integrates various fields such as anthropology, history, and archaeology to offer a well-rounded understanding of Mediterranean civilizations. One floor holds the permanent exhibitions while another floor displays the temporary exhibitions.

What you will be able to see in this museum is extremely diverse: paintings, objects like necklaces or vases, fabrics, sculptures, testimonies, and more than 350,000 objects from every range possible. But the MUCEM is not just about exhibiting objects. It offers a rich and dynamic program, including temporary exhibitions, conferences, film screenings, and artistic events. The museum adopts an interactive approach, with multimedia installations that make the subjects covered accessible to all. Whether you're passionate about history, art, or simply curious, there's something for everyone.

Upcoming Exhibition: Amazigh Cycles, Parures, Motifs

Don’t miss the upcoming exhibition opening on April 30th, Amazigh Cycles, Parures, Motifs, which will delve into the rich and intricate culture of the Amazigh people, showcasing their unique jewelry, clothing patterns, and artistic expressions that have defined this fascinating civilization.

More Than Just a Museum

The MUCEM also offers additional amenities to enhance your visit. Enjoy a meal at its restaurant with panoramic views of the sea, or unwind with a good book at the museum's library, offering a wide selection of works related to the Mediterranean world.
