representation of women in power still low in la Francophonie
According to the International Organization of the Francophonie, there are nearly 140 million women living in Francophone countries. This week we highlight the women of La Francophonie. Women are essential to the functioning of our societies and contribute to the social, political, economic and artistic aspects of their country. Throughout history, women in La Francophonie have engaged in the struggle for their rights.
What is the situation of women in La Francophonie? Inequalities for women are still numerous in French-speaking countries. For
example, gaining access to positions of power is very difficult for women. Below is a list of women in power in French-speaking countries
:
Women in Power in La Francophonie
In France : Elisabeth Borne, in 2022, she was the second woman to become Prime Minister of France.
In Gabon : Rose Christiane Ossouka Raponda is a member of the Gabonese Democratic Party, she recently became Vice President of Gabon.
In Belgium : Sophie Wilmès is the deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs. She was prime minister from 2019 to 2020.
In Togo : Victoire Tomegah Dogbés is currently the Prime Minister of Togo.
In Tunisia : Najla Bouden is the first woman to head the government.
Louise Mushikiwabo is the president of the International Organization of the Francophonie.
An Example of Action
Following the consequences of the pandemic, the international organization of the Francophonie created a fund called "La Francophonie
avec elles"
to help women in precarious situations. Fifty-four projects were supported in twenty-four French-speaking countries. These actions
often include help with access to school and health care, support towards employment, and the fight against domestic violence. For
example, in eastern Senegal, women work in salt wells, and the working conditions are very difficult. Thanks to the funds, an
association is helping women in the sale of salt to improve their income.
