AFSF French classes & Cultural Center in San Francisco

The Alliance Française of San Francisco, as a community-supported and locally-run nonprofit cultural center, wishes you to have a very positive experience, both as a student and as a member.

Please note the following important policies.

Enrollment Policies

The AFSF is a non-profit, non political, non-discriminatory organization operated locally.

Tuition and fees must be paid in full at time of registration.

Acceptable forms of payment are check, money order (payable to Alliance Française de San Francisco), or credit or debit card. When a student's employer pays course fees, an authorization letter from the employer is required.

Enrollment: Registrations are accepted in the order received until the class is declared full (maximum of 14 students).

Mandatory membership

A valid one-year Individual Membership with the Alliance Française of San Francisco is required to register for a Group or private class, certain events and workshops. Membership benefits include borrowing privileges with our large multimedia library and our online library, Culturethèque, as well as discounts to certain Alliance events.

Please note that memberships are nonrefundable and nontransferable.

Placement TEST

Non-beginner students who have not previously studied at the Alliance Française must take a free online placement test before enrolling.

Missed Classes/Make-Up Policy

We cannot provide make-up class options. Therefore, if you miss class, it is forfeited. However, for online classes we encourage you to contact your teacher via email before the class and ask them for the recording (so the teacher will remember to record the class for you). We apologize for any inconvenience.

If you are enrolled in an in-person class and would like to attend the online version of your class for a week while you are traveling, we may be able to accommodate the request, as long as the online course is not full. Contact us a few days beforehand so we can coordinate.

The AFSF does not offer credit for missed classes after registration.

Prorata Policies

Pro-rated prices are only available for late registrations. If a student knows that they will miss one class or more prior to registering for the session, they can call the AFSF and purchase a pro-rated price on a case-by-case basis, if room in the class allows.

When a student enrolls after the first week, our website will automatically prorate the price for up to 4 missed classes based on the number of classes that already took place. Please contact us if you experience any issue and we will apply the prorated price manually.

After week 4 of an 8-week session, for conversation classes and classes level B1 and more, contact us to enroll and we'll manually prorate it for you.

Prorate is not compatible with any discount except Multiple classes during the same session and Conversation Pack.
Please contact our front desk before payment if the prorated price doesn't apply automatically.

The AFSF does not offer credit for missed classes after registration.

Minimum number of students & Course Cancellations

A minimum of six enrollments is required to open fully a class. If this quota is not met, students already enrolled in the class will be receive a reduced number of hours as follows.

Number of Students:
6 or more	Full course duration.
3 or 5	Shortened course duration (see table below). The class is not cancelled, therefore no refunds will be offered.
2	We will offer to keep the class open as a semi-private lesson for an additional fee (see table below). This is not required, and you can choose to have a credit (which can be used toward another class or private lesson) or a refund instead.

The Alliance Française of San Francisco reserves the right to cancel courses, adjust curriculum or change teachers at any time during the session. New classes must reach a minimum enrollment of three students in order for the class to open, and a minimum of five students to be fully open.

Courses are typically cancelled due to insufficient enrollment (minimum of 3 students) or unavailability of an instructor. If your course is cancelled, you will be notified by telephone or e-mail and given the option to transfer, to receive a credit or to be fully refunded.

A note on prorated pricing: If a significant portion of students in a group class are prorated, the number of students needed to keep the class open may be higher. For example, if 2 students in the class are only coming to 4 out of the 8 classes, and are only paying 50% of the class price, they may be counted as 1 student.

Transfers

If a class's coursework is unexpectedly too difficult or easy for you, we will do our best to transfer you to another class in the same session, space allowing. Your original payment will be converted into credit, which we will use toward the new class. If the new class is more expensive, you will be required to pay the difference. If it is less expensive, we will issue the difference as a credit to your account. No refunds will be offered.

Withdrawals and Refunds

For any reason of cancellation from the student, we only offer credits for a future session, applicable towards group or private classes or workshops. We do not offer credit for a less than 24-hour cancellation. No refunds will be offered.

Class withdrawals must be made in writing to afsf@afsf.com and should include a request for a class credit with justification.

In this specific situation a class credit, not redeemable for cash, can be issued up to the end of the sixth week of an eight-week session. This credit is valid for 1 year from the date it was issued. Any class held, whether you attended or not, before receipt of a withdrawal notice will be deducted from the credit.

Refund policy for the Workshops: Attendees can cancel their participation in the workshop 7 days before the workshop start date. Upon cancelation of the workshop, an attendee will receive a credit that is available for any other products offered by the Alliance Francaise of San Francisco and valid for 1 year from the date of the cancellation.

Credits are not issued for membership, books, Apolearn or Moodle platform and other instructional material.

In the case of a class cancelled by the AFSF, and only in this case, a refund may be offered.

Onsite Information

There are no dogs or pets allowed in our building, except certified service animals.

We have a bike rack located in our courtyard. Bicycles and/or scooters are not allowed in the building.

We do not have a parking lot. There is street parking, and a paid parking garage on our block.
