The Test de Connaissance du Français (TCF), designed by the CIEP (Centre international d’études pédagogiques) and accredited by the French Ministry of Education, is a French language proficiency test for non-native speakers of French who wish to evaluate and have their level of proficiency certified for professional, academic or personal reasons.

In general, the TCF grades and ranks candidates at one of the six levels (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 or C2) on a scale defined by the Council of Europe (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). TCF grade results are reliable measurements for determining proficiency.

Each candidate is provided with a certificate stating their test results within two month of the test date, and which is valid for 2 years.

Please consider the time period necessary to receive the certificate (around 2 months) if you want to apply for a school or immigration process.

TCF DAP

Test de Connaissance du Français pour la Demande d’Admission Préalable (TCF pour DAP), an official test awarded by the French Ministry of Education, is designed to assess your French competency. Take this test if you do not have the DALF (Diplôme Approfondi de Langue Française) or advanced diploma in French language, as it is useful for preliminary admission to undergraduate university studies and school of Architecture in France.

The TCF for DAP lasts a total of 3 hours.

The first part (1 hour 25 minutes) is comprised of:

  • an listening examination: 29 questions
  • a proficiency in language structures examination (grammar and lexicon): 18 questions
  • a reading examination: 29 questions

The other part (1 hour 30 minutes) is a writing examination (two exercises to tackle: analysis of a visual document of at least 200 words + an argumentation of at least 300 words).

Be careful! Your copy of the writing examination will not be marked if one or both of the exercises are not completed,if the minimum number of words for each exercise has not been followed, if one or both of the exercises are off-topic.

If I want to submit an application for licence 2, licence 3, master 1, master 2, business school or college, you do not have to take the TCF for DAP, but you have to take the TCF (or   hold the DELF B2 , DALF C1 or DALF C2). In this case, you must apply for the TCF compulsory examinations (listening, language structures and reading). Depending on the establishment, it may require you to  take the optional TCF writing examination and possibly the speaking examination.

We strongly recommend you to contact your school prior to take the test.
