Whatever your level of French may be, you can progress with us with confidence. Our average class size is 6 students — an impressive student to teacher ratio.

The originality of our approach at the Alliance Française lies in our personalized teaching methods, based on a constructive dialogue with the instructor, integrating elements of culture into language learning.

The curriculum follows the guidelines of the FRAMES program defining the different levels of language learning, allowing for a global point of view and optimizing the choice of courses.

Students enrolled in classes for one session or more, receive a complimentary annual, basic individual membership through the Alliance. Benefits include borrowing privileges from our multimedia library and Culturethèque.

What is Level A1 (Courses Beginner 1 to Beginner 4)?

  • You can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type.
  • You can introduce yourself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where you live, people you know and things you have.
  • You can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly.

This reading, conversational course including exercises of pronunciation is focused on Beginners level 4 and Intermediate level 1-2 students. The objective is to offer the participants a chance to read, in class and at home , to talk and to summarize the story every week. In addition, we use a lot of pronunciation exercises.”

What is Level A2 (Courses Intermediate 1 to Intermediate 4)?

  • You can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment).
  • You can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters.
  • You can describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.

What are Levels B1 and B2 (Courses Advanced and Superior)?

Level B1:

  • You can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.
  • You can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken.
  • You can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest.
  • You can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes & ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

Level B2:

  • You can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in your field of specialization.
  • You can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party.
  • You can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

Riquet à la Houppe, by Amélie Nothomb

Le cours de littérature du mercredi matin s’adresse à des étudiants dont le niveau de compréhension écrite est avancé et les compétences orales sont d’un niveau intermédiaire minimum. Le cours suit le format suivant (comme pour le cours du samedi matin): conversation spontanée en début de classe pour la pratique orale, puis lecture d’un passage choisi par l’étudiant et correction de la prononciation + acquisition de vocabulaire, suivi de la discussion basée sur le guide de lecture envoyé par le professeur à chaque étudiant quelques jours avant la classe. Cette session, nous lisons le roman « Riquet à la Houppe » d’Amélie Nothomb, écrivaine belge extrêmement populaire en France.”

Manon des sources, by Marcel Pagnol

Le cours de littérature du samedi matin s’adresse à des étudiants dont le niveau de compréhension écrite est avancé et les compétences orales sont d’un niveau intermédiaire minimum. La dernière session, nous avons lu et discuté « Jean de Florette » du célèbre écrivain provençal, Marcel Pagnol. Cette session est donc consacrée à la suite de ce roman, intitulé « Manon des Sources. » Généralement, les étudiants reçoivent un guide de lecture quelques jours avant la classe, sur lequel est basée notre discussion hebdomadaire. Auparavant, chaque étudiant/e lit à voix haute un court passage qu’il/elle a choisi, ce qui nous permet de travailler un peu la prononciation et le vocabulaire. S’il reste du temps, selon les erreurs commises par les étudiants et notées par le professeur, on fait une révision grammaticale et lexicale au tableau.”

“This class is for an Advanced Level and its purpose is to maintain knowledge of French language on the grammatical, conversational and literary front.
In the first part of the class you will talk about your daily activities and working on grammar with the grammar book. In the second part of the class you will be able to present a subject that you have to prepare each week. Finally, the last part of the class is dedicated to a contemporary literary conversation. Yet, it is not a literature class nor a book club. The aim is to read few chapters at home and to discuss about it.”

What is Level C1 (Courses Experts)?

  • You can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognise implicit meaning.
  • You can express him/herself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions.
  • You can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes.
  • You can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.
